Biography

Meheru Rustom Irani was Mehera's beloved niece, the daughter of Mehera's sister Freiny and Rustom Irani. She became one of the six women who remained with Meher Baba at Meherazad until the endโ€”along with Mehera, Mani, Naja, Goher, and Rano.

In December 1942, at the age of fifteen, Meheru came to Lonavla with her uncle Adi Sr. to spend the Christmas holidays with Baba, and Baba permitted her to remain with Him from then on as a permanent member of the women mandali. In October 1949 she was one of the four women, together with Mehera, Mani and Goher, who accompanied Baba in the New Life.

Growing up with such close family ties to Mehera, Meheru was naturally drawn into the orbit of Baba's love. She dedicated her entire life to service at Meherazad, never marrying, instead devoting herself completely to caring for Mehera and supporting the mandali.

Meheru participated in some of Baba's historic journeys, including the 1952 Western trip to America. Photos from this period show her at the Meher Center in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, part of the intimate circle traveling with Baba.

After Baba dropped His body in 1969, Meheru's role became even more significant as she helped care for her aunt Mehera, who lived until 1989. The bond between aunt and niece was deep and loving, with Meheru providing constant companionship and support during Mehera's later years.

Meheru was known for her gentle presence at Meherazad, welcoming pilgrims who came seeking stories of Baba. Together with the other resident mandali, she helped maintain the atmosphere of love and devotion that Baba had established.

She contributed to preserving Baba's legacy through various publications. She was one of the narrators for 'Tales from the New Life with Meher Baba,' along with Eruch, Mehera, and Mani. She also collaborated on 'Nursery Rhymes in Meher's Time,' illustrated by Susan White, bringing Baba's presence to younger generations.

Meheru lived at Meherazad for decades, witnessing the transformation of the intimate ashram into a place of pilgrimage visited by Baba lovers from around the world. She passed away on April 21, 2012, at the age of 84, and was interred at Upper Meherabad, joining the other mandali who had preceded her in their final resting place near their Beloved.
