Biography

Meherwan Byramshaw Jessawala was born on 22 November 1930, the youngest child of Byramshaw ("Pappa") and Gaimai Jessawala, fourteen years after his brother Eruch; his sisters were Manu and Meheru. In Nagpur in 1930, Meher Baba had indicated to Gaimai, "Eruch is my son; I will give you another," and two months later Meherwan was born. When Baba was told of the birth, he told the family to name the boy Meherwan.

On 1 August 1938 the Jessawala family left everything to come to Baba, when Meherwan was about eight. Placed at first with relatives at Akbar Press, he was brought to Baba at Jabalpur in December 1938 and stayed with the women mandali, the first boy to do so. As a child he travelled with Baba and the women on the Blue Bus tours and spent the war years with Baba's party in places such as Dehra Dun. He later recalled, "He became my father and mother. I looked to Him for everything."

In 1943 Baba sent the family to Poona, where they lived at Bindra House for the next forty-seven years; the house became Baba's halting place between his travels. Before Baba set out on the New Life in October 1949, he called Meherwan to the car and said, "I am taking Eruch with Me. He will be looking after Me and I want you to look after the family." Meherwan answered, "Yes, I will do as you say," and that promise shaped the rest of his life. At his father's wish he finished his education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry; in 1951 he passed his final examination after Baba ordered him to start studying with only days to spare. He hoped to live in the ashram like Eruch, but Baba told him, "Take the first job that you find."

In Poona Meherwan helped find bungalows for Baba, including Guruprasad in 1951, and sent medical supplies and other necessities to Meherazad; from 1961 he organized the regular transport of soft Poona water for Baba's bath. At the 1958 sahavas Baba called him "Eruch's brother and my jewel, an original jewel. From head to foot he is mine." When his father Pappa died in 1959, Meherwan's concern was not the death itself but whether he had kept Baba's order to be in bed at ten o'clock that night.

In 1990 Bindra House was sold, and Meherwan, his mother Gaimai and his sister Manu moved to Meherazad, where he lived until his death. As Baba's resident mandali passed away, he took a more active role in sharing stories of his life with Baba with pilgrims in Mandali Hall. He wrote My Life with Meher Baba and was one of the editors, with Ward Parks, of Meher Baba's Tiffin Lectures compiled from Chanji's notes. He died on 15 July 2016.

Notable Stories

The magician's secret

In 1942, in Dehra Dun, Baba called a passing magician inside for fun. The magician chose young Meherwan, whispered to him, "Now when I clap, stop speaking, and when I clap again, talk!" and announced that his magic would make the boy's tongue useless. Everyone, Baba included, questioned Meherwan, but he stayed silent until the second clap. Afterwards Baba asked why he could not speak. "The magician told me not to speak!" said Meherwan. Baba insisted he had been hypnotized, but Meherwan persisted, "No, Baba, really, he told me not to speak!" and all had a good laugh.

"Look after the family"

When Baba came to Bindra House in Poona to say farewell before the New Life in October 1949, the whole family walked with him to the car. Just before Eruch started the engine, Baba called Meherwan close and said, "I am taking Eruch with Me. He will be looking after Me and I want you to look after the family. It is a nice division of labor and will free Eruch from any worries. Be brave and do what I tell you." Meherwan replied, "Yes, I will do as you say." Eruch often remarked, "If it weren't for Meherwan, I wouldn't be here."

"Will you pass?"

In 1951 Meherwan spent his time searching Poona with Adi Sr. and Gadekar for a house for Baba, and Gadekar secured Guruprasad, leaving Meherwan no time to study for his B.Sc. final examination. As a reward Baba sent for him, and asked when the exam was. "In a few days," he said. "Will you pass?" "Of course." Eruch interrupted that he had not studied at all. So Baba ordered, "All right, now start studying." With only four or five days left, Meherwan concentrated and passed.

The tamarinds

In Hassan in 1940 the children travelling with Baba, Sarwar, Meheru and Meherwan, went out and ate tamarinds, and Khorshed reported it to Baba. Before Gulamasi arrived to scold them, Meherwan told the other two to rinse their mouths, and when she asked, he spoke up, "We didn't! Smell our mouths!" Gulamasi told Baba the report was false. Then Meherwan said to his two accomplices, "Now if Baba asks us, we will have to tell the truth. But we should say that we were only tasting the tamarind and then spitting it out." When Baba asked, Meherwan and Meheru admitted it and received a stroke on the palm; Sarwar denied it and was punished for lying.

Bed at ten o'clock

On 29 May 1959 Baba visited Bindra House, where Meherwan had stayed up all night with Rano, who was gravely ill. Before leaving he told Meherwan, "You did not sleep last night, so tonight go to bed at ten o'clock. This is my order," and that afternoon even stopped his car outside Meherwan's office to remind him. That night, exactly at ten, just as Meherwan was about to go to bed, his father Pappa shouted for him. Meherwan lay down quickly to fulfil Baba's order and then ran to his father's bedside, but Pappa died with the word Baba on his lips. Meherwan was not upset over his father's death; he was worried about whether he had disobeyed Baba's instruction.

"Dear Saint Meherwan"

Naja, Baba's cousin and one of the women mandali, once told this story at Bindra House in Gaimai's presence. One day Baba asked the women whether they had written to their family and friends, and asked Naja in particular. She had written to Meherwan, and Baba coaxed her into reading the letter aloud. It began "Dear Saint Meherwan," and the women burst into laughter. Baba at once turned to them and said that Meherwan was indeed a saint, and everyone fell silent. On another occasion, during a darshan at Guruprasad, someone asked how one could recognize a saint, and Baba pointed to a corner of the hall where young Meherwan was sitting quietly.
