Biography

Krishna Nair came from Kerala; Meher Baba Travels gives his birthplace as Kallur village in Palghat District. In October 1939, when Baba had established his ashram at the estate known as the Links in Bangalore, Jalbhai found this young Kerala boy working in a humble restaurant and brought him to Baba. Seeing him, Baba remarked, "You have a past connection with me," and Krishna was appointed to serve Baba personally. In 1940 at Meherabad, when Baba asked the Bangalore boys what they wanted in life, the others asked for farming, business or a tonga, but Krishna replied, "I want you, Baba!"

For years Krishna was Baba's night watchman, a duty in which one had to sit as still as a statue, at times through the whole night. In 1942 at Dehra Dun, after he had rudely rebuffed a schoolgirl, Krishna insisted to Baba that he would never marry. Baba told him he would marry and have a son, and had him write in his own blood the pledge "I will not marry," which Vishnu kept. In 1946, on leave to see his mother for the first time in nine years, Krishna found her pressing him to marry; Baba wired, "Obey your mother's words," and the wedding took place twelve days later. In 1949, when news came that a son had been born, Baba had the blood pledge brought out before the mandali.

In November 1947, after he struck the servant boy Chandrabhan in Baba's absence, Krishna was sent home to South India, where he lived until 1949. Before the New Life began, Baba sent him instead on a pilgrimage to temples and shrines of all religions throughout India, which took about seven and a half months; afterwards Krishna joined the police force. In 1951 an errand took him to Hyderabad, where Baba was staying. Baba asked him, "Are you willing to come and stay with me again?" Krishna quit his job and rejoined Baba, again keeping night watch in Dehra Dun, Mahabaleshwar and Satara.

In 1955 at Satara a school superintendent wrongly suspected Krishna over a letter sent to one of her pupils. Baba told her that he knew Krishna had done nothing wrong but would send him home anyway, and he told Krishna, "I know you have done nothing wrong but I am sending you away for my own reasons. I will always have my nazar on you and help you internally." After that Krishna was never again kept as a permanent member of the mandali, though Baba called him back on various occasions, such as the 1955 sahavas programs. In March 1957 Baba urgently sent him a telegram: "Don't worry. I am with you. I will never abandon you. Love, Baba."

In 1968 Krishna came unannounced to Meherazad; Baba saw him alone and told him he would not see him for a long, long time. It was their last physical meeting. When Baba dropped his body on 31 January 1969, Krishna arrived at Ahmednagar at midnight and walked the several miles to Meherabad, where he lost consciousness on seeing Baba's body. In 1989 he came back to live at Meherabad, but failing health later took him home to Kerala, where he lived with his daughter until his death on 1 October 2003.

Notable Stories

The pledge written in blood

In Dehra Dun in 1942 Krishna, who wanted nothing to do with women, insisted to Baba that he would never marry. "You will marry!" Baba replied, and when Krishna held firm, Baba had Nilu draw blood from his forefinger and Krishna write with a quill, in his own blood, "I will not marry." Vishnu kept the paper. Four years later Krishna's mother arranged his marriage with Baba's blessing, and in 1949, when word came that his son had been born, Baba asked Krishna in front of the mandali about his wife and son, then had Vishnu bring out the blood pledge, to the amazement of all.

Sent away though innocent

In Satara in 1955 a girls' school superintendent suspected Krishna of sending a love letter to one of her pupils, though he did not even know Marathi. Baba told her that he knew Krishna was innocent but would send him home because she suspected him. Weeping, Krishna protested his innocence. Baba answered that Ram also knew Sita was pure yet sent her into the jungle: "So also, I know you have done nothing wrong but I am sending you away for my own reasons. I will always have my nazar on you and help you internally."

"A long, long time"

In 1968 Krishna arrived at Meherazad unannounced, although Baba was seeing no one. Baba called him in alone and asked why he had come. "I wanted to see you," Krishna said. Baba replied, "You have seen me, now go," and when Krishna said he could come whenever Baba called, Baba gestured, "No, you won't see me for a long, long time. Now it is finished." Only later did Krishna understand: it was his last physical meeting with his Master.

A light stronger than a hundred suns

In 1940, during Baba's seclusion on Meherabad Hill, Krishna carried Baba's meals to his cage-room without ever seeing him, and came only when Baba rang the bell. One afternoon the bell rang out of hours. Krishna opened the gate and saw Baba standing before him: "A blazing light stronger than a hundred suns shone from his body." Krishna swooned, and Baba seized his left arm so hard that the muscle tore, bringing him back to consciousness. "Why did you come inside? Do you want to burn?" Baba demanded. Krishna wept that the bell had rung. Five minutes later Baba came out smiling, caressed his face and said, "Don't worry. I forgive you. What has happened has happened." The muscle never healed properly, and the scar remained a lifelong reminder of what he had seen that day.

Forty-seven snakes

Baba's standing order was that any snake seen must be killed, and as night watchman Krishna killed many. In Dharwar in 1941 he refused to leave his post at the gate to kill a snake in the women's house; Baba told him that he had obeyed outwardly but inwardly given vent to his irritation. Another time Krishna wounded a cobra, and at the end of his watch Baba warned him again and again to tuck his mosquito net into his bedding. Soon after he lay down under a mango tree, the same cobra came for him but could not get through the tight netting, and Krishna killed it: "Baba's warning had saved his life." In Lonavla in 1942 he killed a large cobra on his rounds, and Baba praised him, "You have done well. The snake will jump three lives." Krishna said he killed 47 snakes during his years with Baba.

"God or the Devil?"

At Niranjanpur in 1946, after Baba scolded him for half an hour for quietly killing a mosquito during night watch, Krishna wondered whether Baba was God or the Devil, and admitted it when Baba pressed him. Baba only smiled and took him alone to Hardwar the next day, scolding him again before they set out. Seeking the mast Maujwala Baba, they came upon Nanga Baba, who had stood on one foot under a tree for years and had not spoken. Seeing Baba, he folded his hands and cried, "Lord! Welcome, welcome! Long have I waited to see you!" and begged to be released from his body. Krishna thought, "How stupid I am. Even while staying with Baba I was thinking he was Satan." A week later Baba sent him back with flowers and water for Nanga Baba, and Krishna found that the mast had died that very morning, having said the day before, "My work is done; I am going now."
