Biography

Bhau Kalchuri, affectionately known as "Bhau" (meaning "brother" in Hindi), stands as one of the most significant literary contributors to preserving Meher Baba's legacy. Born Vir Singh Kalchuri on January 13, 1927, in a village in northern India to prosperous parents, he was one of seven children destined for a remarkable spiritual journey.

From an early age, Bhau demonstrated exceptional academic abilities. When he was ten years old, his father sent him to a district school to receive a better education, and from that point forward, Bhau excelled in all his studies. His intellectual pursuits led him to complete three master's degrees in public administration, law, and chemistryโ€”an achievement that reflected both his brilliant mind and his disciplined nature.

Despite his academic accomplishments, young Bhau had no particular interest in spirituality. His colleagues and professors, noting his devotional tendencies and studious nature, had nicknamed him "Punditji." He recited prayers daily with sincere devotion, yet he remained unaware of the deeper spiritual dimensions that would soon transform his life.

Bhau's first encounter with Meher Baba occurred on December 31, 1952, during a public darshan program in Saoner. This meeting proved to be the turning point of his existence. In Meher Baba's own words: "In the darshan programs there were innumerable fishes, but only one was caught!" That one fish was Bhau.

On July 8, 1953, at the age of twenty-six, Bhau permanently joined Meher Baba's mandali in Dehra Dun. His integration into the Master's inner circle was immediate and demanding. Almost immediately upon joining, Baba assigned him the challenging task of caring for Nanga Mast, a spiritually advanced but physically difficult soul. This assignment tested Bhau's patience and surrender in ways his academic training never could.

Baba recognized Bhau's intellectual gifts and put them to divine use. In 1954, Bhau was given the responsibility of organizing the manuscript of "God Speaks" into chaptersโ€”a task that would begin his lifelong service as Meher Baba's primary literary servant. That same year, Baba sent him on a three-month tour throughout Madhya Pradesh to spread the Master's message.

One of Bhau's most significant ongoing duties was serving as Meher Baba's night watchmanโ€”a role that required him to stay awake through the night hours while the Master rested. This intimate service created a profound bond between them. Baba once told Bhau: "Do you know, I was on watch and did not allow anyone to make noise. You keep watch near Me, so I kept watch near you today." The Master also expressed his deep affection through apparent severity: "Because I love you so much, I harass you so much. This harassment is my prasad for you."

Bhau also handled all Hindi correspondence for Meher Baba and served in various capacities at Meherazad. In 1956, Baba ordered him to tutor a poor boy named Ismail, demonstrating how the Master used even educational duties as spiritual training.

In 1957, Bhau witnessed one of the most dramatic demonstrations of Baba's spiritual intervention when the Master, through urgent telegrams Bhau was made to send, reached Krishna Nair on the very day he had gone to take his own life, an event that deepened Bhau's understanding of the Avatar's universal work.

Before his passing in 1969, Meher Baba gave Bhau specific instructions that would define his life's work: to write his biography in verse, eight hundred pages long, opening with the lives of the five Perfect Masters. This directive bore fruit in Meher Darshan (in Hindi verse) and Meher Prabhu (in Hindi prose), the latter published in English as the monumental twenty-volume "Lord Meher", the most comprehensive account of an Avatar's life ever written. Baba had encouraged him: "Always remember that I like your writing very much. Even if the world finds fault with it, you should not mind."

In 1973, Bhau became a trustee of the Avatar Meher Baba Perpetual Public Charitable Trust, eventually rising to serve as its Chairman. In this role, he oversaw all operations at Ahmednagar and Meherabad, ensuring the preservation and continuation of Meher Baba's work in the world.

Beginning in 1985, Bhau embarked on extensive speaking tours worldwide, sharing his personal experiences with Meher Baba and his insights into the Master's teachings. These tours took him to every continent, where he touched countless hearts with his stories, humor, and profound understanding of the Avatar's message.

Bhau's literary output was extraordinary. Beyond "Lord Meher," his works include "Avatar Meher Baba Manifesting," "The Nothing and The Everything" (based on notes from Meher Baba explaining spiritual mechanics), "While the World Slept," "Meher Baba's New Life," plays such as "Prem Mahima" (The Glory of Love) and "Divya Leela" (Divine Game), numerous books of verse in both Hindi and English, and "Awakenings"โ€”an online periodical he published regularly until his final days.

Bhau maintained his characteristic humility throughout his life of extraordinary service. When Sohrabji Damania, the property manager in Satara, asked why he had no servant to carry a heavy load for Baba, he replied: "We are all servants of Baba. It is our good fortune that Baba assigns us such work." With characteristic self-deprecating humor, he once remarked: "I serve only my stomach, and despite how it appears, it really is not against Baba's wish."

On October 23, 2013, at the age of eighty-six, Bhau Kalchuri passed away in Pune, India. His mortal remains were laid to rest in the men's cemetery at Lower Meherabad, near the Samadhi of his Beloved Master. His legacy lives on through his monumental writings, through the countless seekers he guided, and through the ongoing work of the Avatar Meher Baba Trust.

Bhau Kalchuri's life exemplifies how the Avatar transforms an ordinary soul into an instrument of divine purpose. From a studious young man with no special interest in spirituality, he became the biographer who set down the Master's life story for all humanity.

Quotes

โ€œ

If all my orders are obeyed 100 percent with love, you will be free. But if you let your mind come into the picture, it will cause great confusion. The mind is so treacherous that it is impossible to obey. Obedience must be 100 percent.

โ€” Mussoorie, 1953: Bhau had passed his master's examination and come from Nagpur to live with Baba. The next day Baba asked whether he was prepared to do whatever he ordered, and explained what obedience means.

โ€œ

Learn to live like a stone! People trample on it, and in the form of an idol also worship it, but is the stone affected thereby? Not in the least. Whether it is kicked, spit upon or worshiped, it remains unaffected.

โ€” Satara, 1955: by Baba's order Bhau carried a heavy pot on his head from Grafton to Rosewood, and to his shame Sohrabji Damania saw him on the way. Later Sohrabji asked why there were no servants for such work, and Bhau reported his words to Baba.

โ€œ

Good that it happened. I am happy. Have you any idea about my plight? You only had the board around your neck, but the whole world is around my neck!

โ€” Bombay, August 1955: during the darshan at Ashiana Bhau had to stand in the doorway with a board hung round his neck, and newcomers laughed at the sight. Afterwards he told Baba how people had ridiculed him.

โ€œ

You moved thinking I was asleep. But remember, even in sleep, my eyes roam over the entire universe. When I can see so far, can I not see you who are so near to me? Don't ever think that because you are outside, I cannot see you! Even in sleep, I see everything, and I hear even the breathing of a stone! My sleep is conscious sleep.

โ€” Satara, 1955: on night watch outside Baba's room at Grafton, Bhau sat motionless for two hours. When he heard Baba snoring he began, without a sound, to stretch his stiff legs, and at that instant Baba clapped for him.

โ€œ

She has love for me, and the children are mine. They are not yours, so have no concern for whatever I do for them. If you have thoughts, then it is your attachment; if you have no thoughts, then it is love.

โ€” Satara, November 1956: Bhau's daughter Sheela had been badly burned, and Baba ordered a telegram sent to Nana Kher to arrange her treatment. When Bhau objected that Nana should not be troubled, Baba rebuked him for his attachment and pointed to his wife Rama, who never asked for him though she lived with their two children in a remote village.

โ€œ

Because I love you so much, I harass you so much. This harassment is my prasad for you.

โ€” Ganeshkhind, Poona, 3 June 1957: on watch, Bhau nearly choked trying to stifle a cough with his handkerchief, and Baba scolded him and complained bitterly about him to the women while he stood listening by the door. When Bhau told him what had really happened, Baba swore he had known nothing, then embraced him and caressed his face.

โ€œ

Do you know, I was on watch and did not allow anyone to make noise. You keep watch near me, so I kept watch near you today.

โ€” Meherazad, 1958: Bhau, who kept watch by Baba every night, was still asleep when Baba came to the hall one morning, and Baba told the men to make no noise. When Bhau woke and came out, Baba asked whether he had been disturbed.

โ€œ

You have no idea the worth of this medicine. It is priceless and only good luck can obtain it. I have love for you, and because of that, I give it to you. But you don't value my love.

โ€” Guruprasad, Poona, January 1959: Bhau's eyes were very painful, and Baba complained to the women that Bhau harassed him over a little pain. Then he called Bhau in and put eye drops in his eyes with his own hands, and the hurt Bhau said it was not necessary.

โ€œ

Yes, you are right. My lovers are really great. โ€ฆ You have been with me for so many years, yet you still don't understand what I am doing for them! If they come to me, what will they see? This physical form. This is nothing!

โ€” Meherazad, 1968: letters pleading for darshan kept arriving, and Bhau had thought to himself that Baba's lovers were great and wanted only his darshan. Baba made him tell the truth about his thoughts, then answered.

โ€œ

Listen carefully to what I say. I am giving you very important work. I want you to write my biography in verse. โ€ฆ Save 100 pages for my manifestation. I will give you the meters and also tell you about my manifestation later. Don't worry. I will explain everything to you.

โ€” Meherazad, night of 24 January 1969: on Bhau's watch, Baba, racked by sharp jolts, spent nearly an hour conveying instructions for his biography, while Bhau begged him to wait until he was better.

โ€œ

Always remember that I like your writing very much. Even if the world finds fault with it, you should not mind. I tell you honestly, remember it, I like your writing very much. And when I like it, what more do you want?

โ€” Meherazad, night of 24 January 1969: at the end of nearly an hour of instructions for the biography, given amid sharp jolts of pain, Baba spoke of Bhau's writing in Hindi.

โ€œ

John was the youngest of Christ's disciples. Christ used to kiss and loved him dearly. Similarly, I love you. I love all, but this is my personal love.

โ€” Meherazad, January 1969: after telling Eruch that Bhau was his John, Baba explained it to Bhau himself during his watch, and repeated it to him several times in those last days.
